En estos momentos Marilú y yo no encontramos en el avión de regreso a Chicago después de una maravillosa vacación en el norte de Italia y sur de Francia. Ya les contaremos más detalles del viaje cuando tenga la oportunidad de bajar las fotos, pero quiero aprovechar para platicarles de la estancia en Milán y la ópera porque realmente fue una cosa digna de ser compartida con detalles.

El Lunes amanecimos en Como, Italia, en un maravilloso Bed and Breakfast en la punta de una montaña desde donde se observa el lago Como, las villas aledañas y los Alpes Suizos. Desayunamos en un lujoso comedor atendidos como reyes, definitivamente es la forma viajar en Europa, más barato que los hoteles y con atención personalizada.

Después del desayuno empacamos y salimos en el coche a recorrer la carretera que va a Suiza bordeando el lago, no saben que belleza, además nos tocó un día increíble, soleado y fresco. A la 1:00 P.M., después de un café y unos Gnoccis, dimos vuelta en U con destino a Milán.

Llegamos a Milán como a las 3:00 P.M., buscamos un lugar para estacionarnos alrededor del hotel y haciendo uso de mis habilidades aprendidas en el centro histórico de la Cuidad de México logré meterme en un mini lugarcito. Hicimos el check-in, nos arreglamos de pipa y guante y salimos a tomar el metro que nos dejo en la estación “Duomo”. Salimos y allí estaba, frente a nosotros, el imponente edificio “El Duomo de Milano”. No nos entretuvimos mucho porque los papás de Marc nos esperaban en su hotel, así que nos encaminamos hacia el “Gran Hotel Milano” a una cuadra de la plaza. Nos encontramos con Brigitte y Gunther, intercambiamos encargos y salimos hacia La Scala donde de acuerdo a mi intercambio de emails con Luci estarían los boletos para la ópera.

Pasamos a lo que pense que era la taquilla pero era la tienda de souvenirs de La Scala, y los primero que me encuentro al abrir la puerta es una pantalla enorme con fotos de Rolando y sus operas. Alli me dijeron que los boletos eran en la taquilla a la vuelta.

Había mucha gente afuera de la taquilla, una mujer hablo en alemán con la mamá de Marc y le dijo que era para la gente en lista de espera y que no habría problema si llegábamos una hora antes de la función. Así pues, nos encaminamos a cenar en “La Galeria”, rodeados de tiendas del Jet Set y gente vestida a la última moda.

Gunther y yo nos fuimos a sacar dinero del cajero porque habría que pagar los boletos a Rolando en cash después de la función. Cuál fue mi sorpresa cuando me di cuenta que había dejado mi tarjeta en el hotel y solo traía las de crédito. Intenté sacar de la Amex y de la Visa y no pude porque no me sabía los PINs, ¡me moría de la vergüenza!, no quería pedir prestado a Mr. Thrum! Intenté en tres cajeros y nada. Hablé a Visa y me dijeron que me podían mandar un pin por correo (gracias). No sabía qué hacer. Hablé a Amex y me ligaron la chequera a la tarjeta y pude sacar lana. Saqué €300 para no quedarme corto, y después del momento de stress me senté a disfrutar la cena y la compañía.

A las 7:15 salimos a La Scala que estaba a la vuelta. En la taquilla dije mi nombre y me vieron con cara de “What?”, luego dije que venía con Villazón y me señalaron a un señor que estaba en una mesita a un lado. Checó los sobres que tenía en la mano y apareció uno que decía Noregna.

Felíz de tenerlos al fín en la mano, me dispuse a abrirlos y llevarme dos sorpresas: 1) Solo eran dos boletos y 2) costaban €240 ¡cada uno! En unos segundos pasaron mil cosas por mi cabeza, y mi primer reacción fue decirle al señor que yo había pedido cuatro boletos, llamó a un tipo de adentro y este salió con la mejor disposición diciendo que lo esperáramos un segundo.

Tardo unos 15 minutos, salió y nos dijo, disculpen, tengo que ir adentro de nuevo, parece que hubo un malentendido. En ese momento las opciones eran intentar comprar dos boletos o que Brigitte (the opera fan) y yo nos quedáramos en la función. En eso el señor nos dijo en inglés con acento italiano “pasen por aquí” y nos metió por la puerta de los artistas. Allí estaban otros amigos de Rolando llamados Paty y Ricardo (Anel los conoce, viven en NY) esperando también sus boletos. Tuvimos una conversación casual con ellos entre violinistas y artistas del reparto que entraban y salían. Finalmente salió este señor empapado en sudor y nos dio dos boletos extra y otros dos a Paty y Ricardo. Uno de los ushers nos llevo a Gunther, Brigitte, Marilú y a mí a nuestro lugar. Más tarde nos enteraríamos que Rolando solo pidió dos boletos para nosotros, entre emails que fueron y vinieron no nos entendimos del todo. Al parecer Rolando tuvo que hacer magia a la mera hora lo cual fue un detallazo de su parte.

La Scala es imponente y lujosa por dentro. El menos arreglado del lugar tenía un Rolex y usaba perfume Channel. Yo por suerte me puse mi Mont Blanc de imitación para dar el gatazo (gracias Papá). Mientras iniciaba la función mi cabeza daba vueltas de cómo le pagaría a Rolando, ¡tendría que pedir prestado a Gunther! ¡Pero él tampoco tenía más que para sus boletos! Acabé concluyendo que le mandaría el resto a Rolando y me olvidé del tema. Y si ver a los Rolling Stones hasta adelante cuesta $500, ver a Rolando en La Scala no tiene precio.

Las luces intermitieron indicando la primera llamada, lo hicieron otra vez y finalmente se apagaron. Y al cabo de unos minutos, allí estaba, Rolando, el mismo que iba a hacer la tarea a la casa, con el papel principal de Simone en la obra L' Elisir d' Amore en La Scala de Milán, la capital de la ópera mundial. La opera tiene tres actos. El tercer acto es el más largo y espectacular. Rolando sale y canta sólo la parte más emotiva de la noche. No sé si todos, pero yo no pude contener un par de lágrimas de emoción. Al terminar la opera la ovación duró varios minutos, Rolando y los actores principales salieron tres veces a agradecer.

La gente se empezaba a retirar y yo me acerqué al usher y le dije en italiano): “Quedé de ver a Villazón en su camerino”, asintió con la cabeza y me dijo “por aquí”. Sin más preguntas nos llevó tras bambalinas y llegamos al frente de su camerino, solo éramos nosotros cuatro y un par de gentes de seguridad. Luego llegaron Paty y Ricardo. A lo lejos se escucharon las voces de los artistas que bajaban del escenario y se escucharon las risas de Rolando, luego apareció.

Tenía una cara de agotamiento y se disponía a entrar a su camerino cuando me vió y me dió un abrazo con mucho cariño. Le presenté a Marilú y a los papás de Marc y me dijo: “Cenamos ¿No? ¿O qué?”. Nos pasó a su camerino y platicamos mientras se quitaba el maquillaje. La mamá de Marc no podía creer lo que estaba viviendo. Obviamente hablamos puro Español así que Brigitte y Gunther decidieron no acompañarnos a cenar, se tomaron unas fotos con Él y se despidieron.

Rolando nos dijo: “nada más déjenme ir a firmar y nos vamos”. Fuimos detrás de Él como sus guardaespaldas, abrió una puerta y “Los Villazonistas” estaban allí esperándolo con pancartas y vituperios.

Rolando se porto de maravilla con ellos, se tomó fotos, firmo autógrafos, hizo chistes, “Viva Mexico chingadamadre” les decía a los paisanos.

Este rollo duró como media hora, todos se fueron y como Juan por su casa salimos por la puerta lateral de La Scala a buscar una pizzería que Rolando ya conocía. En el camino la gente sentada en los restaurantes lo saludaba cordialmente y le hacían señas con el pulgar hacia arriba.

Llegamos a la pizzería y platicamos super agusto por más de dos horas. Fué cuando le hablé a Anel al celular. Platicamos de todo, sobre todo de los niños, de cómo crecen, de que hacen, etc. Un poco más tarde Rolando sacó el tema de la carta que le mandé y me dijo que con muchísimo gusto haría lo que yo le pida: “Tú nomás dime y lo hacemos". Incluso compartio algunas ideas

Al cabo de un rato de plática, pedimos la cuenta que pagó él mismo y salimos caminando hacia el hotel. Nos tomamos unas fotos afuera del Duomo y nos despedimos con un abrazo y un “estamos en contacto”.

Realmente esta oportunidad cayó del cielo y fue tan perfecta que aún no puedo creer que en efecto sucedió. Al final de esa noche y este viaje, no nos queda más que dar gracias a la vida por tan grandes oportunidades. Por la gente que ha puesto en nuestro camino desde que nacimos y por la educación que nos dieron nuestros papás que nos ha permitido conocer gente tan buena, compartida y talentosa. No solo la reseña que les acabo de hacer, además la estancia en la casa de Bondol en el sur de Francia fue de ensueño. La casa de los papás de Claire esta en medio de viñedos, quesos, lanchas de madera y peces recién sacados del Mediterráneo. Concluimos nuestra vacación comiendo castañas, tomando vino tinto y viendo el atardecer en el mar desde la terraza dándonos a entender con Jean-Paul y Martine entre Inglés, Español, Italiano y Francés.

Ana Mary participo en el programa "trae tu hijo a trabajar" por primeva vez, estuvo muy contenta. La primavera nos permite estar afuera como el resto de las fotos lo demuestran.

Ana was part of the "bring your daugther to school day" for the first time, She truly enjoyed it. Spring allows us to be outside as the rest of the pictures testify!

A SUMMER TO REMEMBER - 2007

Hello Friends and Family! This summer has been so exciting and we were blessed with a ton of visits, that tells us that family and good friends are forever! Since we haven't been in touch so much lately we though this would be a great way to give you an update on our lives. Hopefully you can do the same or at least send us an e-mail and tell us you are doing great!

Ana Mary is now 6 and She just started 1st. grade, Diego is 4, Mateo is 15 months and Marilu and I keep getting older. Marilu is now oficially the Spanish teacher at Brookview Montessori School, our kids' school and now that we are official residents, She is paid! I still work at Whirlpool, now managing sales one of our corporate trade partners that sells tons of electronics and appliances, I guess in that order.

Even though we are a very tight family, I realized we didn't have a recent picture of the five of us, so I am going to have to show you us separately. That should also tell you a bit about our lives these days, pretty hectic with three kids and tons of activities. Well worth it!

We moved into a new house last year and we've been enjoying it a lot, except when the monthly payment comes, but the remaining 29 days of the month are very enjoyable!

Summer is exciting in our lives, not only the days get very long but the long awaited nice weather allows us to enjoy the Michigan outdoors - we remember how we joked before coming to the US how 'gringos' wore shorts when temperatures were barely beareable, now we understand.

Summers are different for many reasons, everything changes, including the people we see on a frequent basis, like our dear friends The Thrums, who take a summer-long vacation to their native France. We miss them a lot but we are happy for them since they spend it in wonderful places with their family.

For the past three years the summer starts with a long awaited event: Diego's birdthday party at Siver Beach, one of our favorite places for the summer. This year, as previous, he's been luck and got great turnout, great presents and good weather.

And you know, for those of you that haven't been here, this is the view from Silver Beach, you'll know why we love it!

To start the summer with excitement, Diego learned to ride his bike on his own. What a great day for him and daddy! Watch him:

As the weather heats up and school finishes, the summer activities kick-off. This year we chose to start the kids in T-Ball, which they truly enjoyed, specially since daddy was the head coach of their team "Tiny Happy People".

T-Ball kept us busy for weekends and even some weekdays. We then received our fist visit: Paty Berron and her husband. They both came with the excuse to do shopping for their upcoming baby girl. We had a great few days and they came back loaded, including the usual KitchenAid gadgets that visitors get when they visit Whirlpooland. So you know, if you want some KitchenAid gadgets, just come visit us.

As summer got to its peak and the sun started to come down at 10:00 PM, T-Ball was starting to get old but to keep the interest and fun, Yesi, Mariul's highschool friend and her two kids, Patricio, 6 and Alex, 2 joined us for a couple of weeks.

The kids had a great time going from one camp to another, while Marilu and Yessi stayed up until after midnight talking and talking. It always amazes me how much women can talk for hours and hours without getting to the point.

The Resinas family stayed at the Norenas for about 15 days, as we dropped them at the O'Hare airport, Nona, Nono and a special visitor were arriving from Mexico. That special visitor was Javier, my sister's son.

As usual the Nonos had a great time spoling the Norena kids buying everything that their finger is able to point. I think Javier had a great time, the enjoyed one of the best sunsets of the summer, got to help me mow the lawn, ride on a speed boat, go to the Kalamazoo Safari, eat all kinds of food and his favorite summer activity: shop at the downtown toy store!

As Nona and Javier left, synchronized as birds flying, Pili my syster in law arrived with Sofi and Maria. The kids had a great time with their cousins and they also got to do all kinds of camps, peach picking, a trip to Chicago and much more, including playing with Uncle Moises' Guitar Hero game.

Pili also got to do things She never though She was going to do in her visit, like helping me with my annual paint in the Chalk the Block festival in St. Joseph, Michigan or skydiving at Indiana's Skydiving Academy.

As our last visitors left, our friends came back from their long vacation and we welcomed the arrival of a new school year and celebrated the joy of having great friends and living in a great place.
